Save the date! The River Theater Company‘s elves, actors, dancers, singers and production crew are busy preparing their Christmas gift to the community:  A Christmas StoryThe Musical , the  Broadway hit  with  music by Oscar and Tony winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen). This production will be the New Hampshire premier, with performances November 17, 18 ( evening) and 19 ( matinee)  at the Claremont Opera House.

Director Mike Wright notes that the group is still welcoming cast members, especially men singers, children who can tap, as well as 2 friendly and floppy dogs. Most rehearsals take place at the Charlestown Town Hall Theater.

The Theater’s group of children, teens and adults hail from a wide area of southern Vermont and New Hampshire.  The Parker family will be played by John Luther, Laura Carbonneau and Wesley Nadeau as The Old Man, Mother, and Randie, with Miles Sheehan as the determined, Red Ryder BB gun- obsessed Ralphie. Other featured roles are played by Ben Boyington as the   Narrator ( Jean Sheperd) , Katie Walsh as Miss Shields ,with Ralphie’s classmates and children’s ensemble played by Alani Andino, Matthew Eagan, Jean Gagnon, Lanie Goodwin,  Kyle Hines, Mia Koponen, Anthony Mitchell, Jade Nadeau, Brayden Rostron, and Joshua Town. The adult ensemble includes Elias Boyington, Joshua Delaney, Maria Ganio, Jeanie Levesque, Sam Maskell, Sharon Miller, Wyatt Pearce, Caleigh Plunkett, and Ruth Pratt. Music Director is Katja Kleyensteuber. Other elves busy working behind the scenes are Samaira Aldrich, John Blair, Joan Donohue, Bill Lockwood, Ira Wilner and many others.

The story is based on the classic comedy film of the same name and American humorist Jean Shepherd’s autobiographical novel, In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. Set in the 1940s, in the fictional town of Homan, Indiana , it follows the quest of 9 year old Raphie Parker for  Christmas gift of his dreams, an Official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. Rebuffed at every turn, Ralphie plots numerous schemes to achieve his goal. Everything from one of the most popular Christmas movies ever is here: a rather nasty Santa and his elves, pink bunny pajamas, the triple –dog dare to lick a freezing flagpole, and of course, the unforgettable a leg lamp award. The music features lovely ballads as well as show-stopping ensemble numbers that are sure to please all ages.

River Theater Company received a generous grant from Claremont Savings Bank to support this production, and welcomes contributions from other local organizations, businesses and individuals.

The group is always looking for volunteers who love theater and community events but don’t want to appear on stage. There are a lot of opportunities to get involved- set construction, props, costumes, production assistants, advertising, and more!
